In February, the U.S. House passed the SAVE Act 218–213. It would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. Eighty-three percent of Americans support that idea, including a majority of Democrats.

It is now sitting in the Senate, where it needs 60 votes and Republicans have 53. Blocked.

Here is what most people don’t know: Arizona has required proof of citizenship to register for more than twenty years. One of only five states in the country where it’s in force this November. The thing Washington is fighting about, Arizona already does.

So why isn’t Arizona going further? Katie Hobbs. She has vetoed more legislation than any governor in Arizona history, and election integrity bills have been among her most consistent targets. Senator Wendy Rogers has voted for every one of them.

Arizona is the test case the whole country is watching. If Arizona strengthens citizen-only elections with a Governor who’ll sign the bills, every state legislature in America has a model to copy — and the Senate has one less excuse.

If it gets rolled back, so does the national argument.
