Sen. Wendy Rogers Fights to Protect Arizona’s National Guard from Unauthorized Combat Deployments

Veterans group Bring Our Troops Home recently praised Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers for supporting the Defend the Guard law. Sen. Rogers, who served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, has been pushing for this law for the past three years. The goal is to make sure that Arizona’s National Guard cannot be sent into combat unless Congress officially declares war, as required by the U.S. Constitution.

The Defend the Guard Act, introduced by Sen. Rogers as Senate Bill 1495 (SB1495), would stop the governor from sending Arizona’s National Guard into combat unless Congress approves it first. The bill recently passed a 4-3 vote in the Senate Military Affairs and Border Security Committee, moving it forward in the legislative process.

Bring Our Troops Home, led by Sgt. Dan McKnight, a 13-year U.S. military veteran, has been working across the country to support this effort. The group believes that service members should only be sent into battle if Congress follows the Constitution and gives clear approval. Sgt. McKnight thanked Sen. Rogers for her dedication and also mentioned support from Rep. Paul Gosar, who has pushed for more accountability before troops are sent into danger.
